Growing Up Into Salvation (Part 2)

1 Peter 2:1-3

We invite you to join us for worship each Sunday morning at 9:30. You can download our service on iTunes or tune in for “The Good Word” each day on AM 1230 WSAL or on Hoosier Country  103.7 FM just after 8am. The last time we talked about those heinous sins that come from within the heart of the ungodly. They are used with the intent of hurting, slandering, or defaming Christians. Peter told us to rid ourselves of such shameful mannerisms, now he is going to tell us what to put in place of those sins. We are:

  1. TO DESIRE THE SINCERE MILK OF THE WORD. This is one of those places in Scripture where God tells us to stop doing one thing, and start doing another. All Christians, no matter what your “spiritual age” might be need the milk of the Word because we are all “babes” in some part of our lives. True Christians are begotten children of God born into new life from the inside out. Doesn’t it make sense that if we are children of God that we find our strength for daily living in the Word of God Who gave us new life? A person who has new life in Christ cannot continue to live on the garbage of the world. The word “crave” means a strong desire or longing for. It is a need that is so strong within us that we must have what we crave or we will not continue to live. Is that how you view daily time in the Bible? Does your soul crave, need to hear from God, or you just won’t make it through the day? Peter also refers to the Word as milk. He is not suggesting milk is only for babies. He is telling us, as one writer says, it (Scripture) is the very substance of live, comprising that which all Christians need to progress in their spiritual life. The milk is also to be pure. Only pure milk is right for nourishment and growth. Drinking contaminated milk results in sickness and weakness. Only the pure, infallible, inspired, inerrant Word of a Thrice Holy God brings the proper health and strength to our redeemed hearts. We all need to consider ourselves “children” who need to be properly nourished and strengthened every day! It is interesting that Peter uses the Greek word “logicos” when he speaks of pure “spiritual” milk. The word spiritual here means logical or reasonable. The point is that for pure, healthy, strong growth as redeemed children of God, it is reasonable that we would grow on the nourishment provided by God in His Word. It is logical that God would provide for us that which grows us into the kind of people He wants us to become. Since our new birth comes through the Word of God, and is sustained by the God of the Word, it is reasonable and logical  we would then grow by that same Word. It does not take a theological scholar to understand that Peter is guiding us to eliminate from our hearts all that would hinder our spiritual growth and our fellowship with other believers, and replace it with the only reasonable and logical source of growth, which is the Word of God. Take out the bad and replace it with that which gives proper nourishment to a new born child of God. It’s so logical!
