Jeremiah 25:1-7

Just 12 years ago we declared as a nation “we will never forget!” In some ways we haven’t forgotten because 9/11 changed live in America in some ways permanently. However, in many other ways we have forgotten. Many Americans can remember a time in our history we were so strong we thought it impossible for America to fall. Many of those same people can’t believe what they see today. The question is, “Why are we surprised?” Why all this is happening in America is given in Scripture, and that isn’t surprising, is it?
- WE HAVE NOT LISTENED! In Jer. 25:3, 4, 7 God makes a condemning indictment when He tells Israel she is not listening to Him. The word hear from God’s perspective means “to hear with a heart that fully intends to take action.” Read Ex. 24:7 then Isa. 42:18-25. See it? People heard but didn’t listen. Not much has changed in 3,000 years has it! All of Scripture is telling us that the only way to avoid God’s wrath is to listen with a heart that intends to obey what He says. God might rephrase Jer. 24:3 to America today thus: for the last 237 years from Plymouth Rock to this very day I have sent you great men of God from Billy Sunday to Billy Graham and you have not listened! The saddest truth is that God can say that to His redeemed today! We are as guilty as anyone in failing to listen to God! Because we haven’t listened,
- WE HAVE NOT LEARNED! Read Matt. 22:29. In just one sentence Jesus describes America’s problem. Why have we not learned? It takes much effort and energy to learn anything to the point it becomes a way of life. We have become, in large part, a welfare society that is more prone to encourage people to be satisfied with handouts and receiving “a day’s wages for doing nothing!” We are a lethargic, apathetic nation that is content to let anyone else do whatever, while most just sit and complain! God is very clear in telling us that to be a true Christian is not easy, nor is it carefree. In fact, those who really listen and learn know true Christians are promised adversity and problems in this life. It’s the next one that is perfect! Because we have not listened and learned,
- WE HAVE NOT LEFT! In other words, we see no reason to leave our current philosophy and lifestyle because we see nothing wrong with it. Therefore, Jer. 25:7, 8 are our consequences. We have brought harm to ourselves! We are more concerned about human rights than God’s right. We focus more on gun control than Spirit control. We are content with government corruption rather than contending for Godly convictions. We thrive on nausea from Hollywood, instead of knowledge of The Holy One. Instead of having no other gods, America has no God!!! America is dying, but she is not dead!! There is still hope for God’s people to move into and live in 2 Chron. 7:14 so He can keep His promise there. We need to listen to Him and learn from God, Who will cause us to leave our sin and turn to Him.
